At the base of Namakkal’s rocky hill lies the Ranganathar Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a peaceful form of Lord Vishnu who rests on the serpent Adisesha.
This temple is said to be over a thousand years old, built by the Pallava and Chola kings. The architecture here is simple yet stunning, with carvings on stone and a calm, devotional atmosphere.

The deity here is carved out of the rock itself and stands in a fierce posture, radiating energy and strength. According to legend, Lord Hanuman stands outside this cave in eternal meditation, always focused on Lord Narasimha.
Although this temple is smaller and quieter than others, it has a deep spiritual vibe that makes it ideal for meditation and prayer.

Anjaneyar Temple—The Giant Hanuman of Namakkal
Perhaps the most famous temple in Namakkal is the Anjaneyar Temple, where an 18-foot statue of Lord Hanuman stands tall, literally under the open sky. This massive idol is not inside a sanctum or gopuram. This icon symbolizes his limitless devotion.
What is the origin of this unique feature?
During the time of the Ramayana, Hanuman was carrying Dronagiri Mountain for the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshman. And also, he carries a sacred stone called a Saligrama from the Himalayas. On his way back, he stopped in Namakkal to rest and pray. He placed the stone down, but once it touched the ground, it wouldn’t move again.
At the time he heard the voice, he was instructed to return to help Lord Ram win the Ramayana War and safeguard Goddess Sita. Thereafter, Hanuman returned to Namakkal for the saligrama stone. That stone became the Ranganathar deity, and Hanuman chose to stay here, facing the cave of Lord Narasimha, in meditation.
Even today, he stands silently facing his beloved Lord, blessing every devotee who comes his way.
Devotees flock here on Saturdays and festival days to offer garlands made of vadai (a kind of lentil fritter), butter, tulsi leaves, and more. The power and presence of Hanuman here are said to be life-changing.
